Introduction: About Me

My name is Chandler Tibiletti Stovall, but I go by Tib for short. I don't know why my parents named me Chandler only to call me Tib from the day I was born. But never mind that. I am a senior graduating in December of this year. I am an Advertising major with a minor in General Business. The coolest thing about advertising is that there are so many aspects to it. There's the business and administrative side of it and there's the creative side of it. There is so much you can do in advertising, it will never get boring. I love coming up with new ways to sell and market a product. The reason I'm graduating in December is because I changed my major from Marketing my junior year, and that put me a semester behind in my coursework.

Other than school, I am very interested in music. I have played guitar since the age of 11 and have loved every minute of it. I've played in several bands and have even professionally recorded in studios. While I don't plan on pursuing music as a career, I try to keep it as prevalent in my life as possible. A way I do this in college is participate in University Sing and Sooner Scandals, a competition in which students write and direct their own mini-musicals and perform them in Holmberg Hall.

As far as TV shows go, I think I've watched the entire series of The Office more than I can count, and it still never gets old. I love funny shows and movies because I like to think of myself as a generally happy person, so why not watch TV shows that make me happy. However, I also enjoy the show Black Mirror, which is about as far from happy and funny as a show can get. It's basically a modern-day Twilight Zone, but a little darker. And by a little, I mean a lot. While the Twilight Zone consists of stories that focus on the weirdness of the situation the characters are in, Black Mirror has you get to know the main character of the episode, throw them into the worst situation you can think of, and just when you think it's over, the writer gut-punches you at the end of the episode with a devastating twist. Rinse and repeat that method for 4 seasons.

So.. that was a little bit about me. I look forward to all this class has to offer and what I will learn!

  1. SO TRUE about the creative side of advertising, Tib! I love ads that manage to tell a short story in some really memorable or dramatic or funny way in the space of just a minute or two. For an example of a seriously creative ad in India, here's a public service announcement for wearing a bike helmet... done with Indian gods! The gods you will see are Vishnu, Durga, and Ganesha: Vishnu on Garuda, Durga on her lion, and Ganesha on his mouse — but "even those who protect you protect their heads" ... so they wear their helmets when they ride: What Gods wear before they ride

And you have me really intrigued about this Black Mirror show; I have not watched it, but it sounds like my kind of show. It also sounds like a storytelling style you could use for this class: there are plenty of devastating twists in the epics, that's for sure... often because of the karma of characters in their earlier lives. Karmic Mirror!

  2. Tib, I bet that your creativity from music will really help in the future for your advertising career! It's awesome that you want to keep music a main point in your life. It's hard to make a career out of music, but it is important to maintain doing the things you love! Maybe I'll see you doing some Scandals stuff this spring as well!

  3. Hi Tib!, It's cool to see another passionate musician in the class. One of my goals this year is to write at least 10 different songs, and maybe if I'm lucky I will make a little bit of money in the process. However, I too do it merely for the love of music. It's also cool that you play the guitar, that is an instrument I have always wanted to learn. Advertising seems like it will be a great way for you to continue to incorporate music into your life.

  4. Hey Tib! Good to know there's another guitarist in the class! Though you probably play much more than I do these days, haha. Advertising definitely requires a lot of creativity to really grab potential customers attention. I've watched a bit of Black Mirror myself, my favorite episode was Be Right Back, and it was also the first one I watched. Let me know which one was your favorite sometime!

  5. Hey Tib!

What kind of music do you like to listen to/play? I don't play any instruments but I love music. Most of what I listen to is heavy metal, but I listen to other stuff. If you're interested, check out The Handsome Family. They're a great Americano rock band. The Office is one of my favorite shows. Its one of those shows that I'll just put on for "background noise", but then I just end up watching it for hours. Prison Mike is my favorite!

  6. Hello Tib,

Advertising does sound like a very interesting field to be in. I bet it takes lots of creativity and innovative thinking to keep coming up with new and good advertisements. I'm behind a little farther than you so and I don't think being a semester behind isn't too bad :). It's really cool that you're so into music! What is your favorite genre if you have one and what got you into it in the first place?

  7. Hi Tib,

I never thought about advertising as a major and my major is MIS which also comes in business. I do agree with you that advertising does sound like a interesting major and it does have creative side. I learn last semester so much about how to analyze advertising and think deeply what they are trying to say or tell form video they made, the color use etc.

  8. TIB!!
So glad I finally get to have a class with you after being at the same university for almost 4 years! I am so glad you found a major that allows you to do analytical work as well as create. I feel like you will be able to do both so well since you are musically inclined! I am so excited to follow you through your blog this semester and see what awesome stories you come up with!

  9. Hi Tib! I like really like the layout of you blog it looks so much fun! I'll be graduating in December too. That's awesome that your an Advertising major, I have a bunch of friends in that major and they love it. I'm glad you found a major you love! I took a Marketing course back in high school and got my Associate's in it but it's not as fun as what I do now which is MIS but it's still pretty useful. Good luck for the rest of the semester!

  10. Hi Tib, it is nice to meet you! I am glad that you found a major that you love that encompasses both creativity and business. That extra semester will be worth it I am sure. :) Your love for music is evident and I am glad that you still keep that hobby alive - it is important to have an outlet from school, right? Many of my friends have watched The Office and have loved it! I feel like I need to watch the show but maybe during the summer when school does not get in the way haha. :) Well, it is nice meeting you and I hope you have a great semester!

  11. Hi Tib! First of all, I really like the layout and theme of your blog. My parents are the same way; they have never called me by my first name before. I admire that you have been playing guitar for so long; I wish I was able to play an instrument. I am a huge fan of the Office too! I have watched the series multiple times!

  12. Hi Tib! I'm so glad you found a major you really enjoy. I think it's totally worth it to be a little behind if you graduate with no regrets about your major. I am currently watching the Office for a third time! Last night I watched the episode where Dwight cuts off the face of the CPR dummy lol. I also really enjoy Black Mirror! I agree it's very dark. There were some episodes where I felt very shaken and uncomfortable after watching them. Like, there was something very wrong with that universe and somehow I could see a part of it in our society. Nice to meet you!

  13. Hi Tib. Really liked your intro, although now I can't imagine you as anything else than your younger self playing the guitar. I also saw your meme about doing extra credit instead of the readings. I got pretty unambitious during the snow days, so I will be exploring that method today. My roommate has also watched the Office over and over again, so I've picked up bits and pieces. He made me watch the episode where Michael has to take back the tuition he promised to a whole class of kids... I will never watch that again.

  14. Hey Tib! I enjoyed reading your Introduction and I too love music although I don't know how to play anything and I'm the best singer. This is why I was confused when I was chosen for U-Sing my freshman year. I too love The Office and wish a new comedy show would come out since I need to mix it up.

  15. Hi Tib! Great introduction post! I have a friend with a similar first name situation. Her parents always told her it was because it did not flow (she was confused about this too). I have never watched The Office, but I hear a lot of people like it, so it is definitely on my list. Great post and good luck this semester.

  16. I was raised by my grandparents, and one thing they imparted to me was a love of the Twilight Zone. I was so inspired by Rod Serling, and every time a midnight marathon came on, I watched every single black and white masterpiece. I feel the same about Black Mirror, in a way. It is so creative and draws from all the best aspects of Twilight Zone, I love it. And I love its harshness, too. That show doesn't play around!

  17. I love that this story was told from the king's perspective, allowing us to look out from his eyes. I felt the book we read didn't lend enough time to express the horror a husband (and especially a king, who hopes for nothing but sons) at his wife drowning all of his children as soon as they were born! I have to hand it to him - he was dedicated to a promise, for sure. Great storytelling! Loved your work here.

  18. Really cool that you know how play guitar, I tried learning when I was younger but instead of formal instructor my family bought me a VHS tape and I could not figure it out on my own at 7 haha. I might try picking it up again when I'm done with school. Hope you enjoy your time here in this class, I know I have and I enjoyed the myth-folklore I did last semester as well.

  19. Hey, Tib, nice to meet you! I was an advertising major once upon a time but it just wasn't quite the right fit for me. I do agree that advertising has a really cool creative side. I like funny shows and movies as well, I've seen "The Office" a few times all the way through myself. I hope your semester is going well.

  20. Hey Tib, funny story my grandparent just named my father Greg but everyone thinks it is short for Gregory, nope. They couldn’t understand why they would name him Gregory when they were always going to call him Greg. I guess it is just weird things like that that parents think of when they are naming their children. It sinks that you have to wait one more semester before you can graduate but why rush into the real world. Good luck in your classes this semester.

  21. Hey Tib!
I really like the design and layout of your blog and I feel like incorporating personal photos into your introduction was a nice touch! Also, I think its so cool that you play guitar and are really passionate about music. I hope you are having a great semester so far and I can’t wait to explore the rest of your blog!

  22. Hey Tib!
I love that your name is Tib. THanks for using that name and going by it! THe shortness of the name and because it sounds so different makes it really rememorable! I look forward to reading some of your stories!
